Store Bought Whitening Treatments VS Professional Teeth Whitening

Store Bought Whitening Treatments VS Professional Teeth Whitening

Not all teeth whitening methods offer the same results. Today our Surrey dentists share some of the differences between at-home and professional teeth whitening treatments.

Teeth whitening can be an effective way to help remove stains and improve the overall look of your smile.

That said, if you are considering whitening your teeth it's important to note that not all teeth whitening methods produce the same results.

Store Bought Whitening Kits

There are a variety of teeth whitening kits readily available in pharmacies and supermarkets. These store bought whitening kits contain stronger bleaching ingredients than whitening toothpaste, and will whiten your teeth somewhat, but typically these kits aren't as effective as the professional whitening treatments available from your dentist.

Store bought whitening kits tend to be a 'one size fits all' option. These whitening treatments just can't offer custom whitening trays fitted perfectly to your unique smile or the added safety of having your dentist monitor your results, or any possible side effects.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Your dentist can provide you with whitening gels with stronger bleaching agents than those generally found in store bought whitening treatments.

Our dentists offer professional teeth whitening treatments that you can use in the comfort of your own home. Here's how it works:

  • First make an appointment to visit our office. At that appointment we will make impressions of your teeth to create your whitening mouthguard.
  • The mouthguard will be custom made for your mouth and can be worn while you are awake or sleeping. It is also thin enough that  you will even be able to talk and work while wearing it.
  • At the second appointment you will be given your mouthguard, dental teeth bleaching materials, and full instructions for use. These instructions will provide you with details on how to apply the gel and how long you need to use the whitening treatment each day.

Whitening your teeth under the professional guidance of your dentist can be a safer than using store bought products. Our team of dental professionals are trained to spot and treat any side effects experienced by patients during the whitening process.

Typically, professional teeth whitening produces better results since the bleaching gels supplied by your dentist are stronger than store bought kits.

Possible Side Effects of Teeth Whitening

Be sure to consult with your dentist before using any teeth whitening products! The long-term use, (or over-use), of whitening or bleaching products may cause side effects including, tooth sensitivity, and tooth abrasion.
